What resources do students have to upgrade their computer literacy and technology skills?
Are there free computer classes I can take?
Answer
One of FRCC's Student Learning Outcomes is "Use Information and Technology Effectively." FRCC Libraries offer a few different options for upskilling related to computer and technology skills.
Online Classes
- Poudre Libraries subscribes to LinkedIn Learning, which FRCC students and staff can use with a Poudre Libraries library barcode (or their wolf card if it's been added as a library card). LinkedIn Learning has several computer, software, technology, and business classes.
- Alternatively, FRCC students can find technology and software-related ebooks, audiobooks, podcasts, and courses in O'Reilly for Higher Learning. Note: many of these tutorials are more advanced computer science topics.
- FRCC students who are student employees can login to NeoEd to find basic technology classes.
In-person Classes
At Poudre Libraries in Fort Collins, there are regular free group computer classes for a variety of topics, like using Microsoft Office tools, learning about AI, setting up an email, etc. Library cards are not required to sign up: Technology Learning - Poudre Libraries
One-on-one help - Digital Navigators
Digital Navigators are Americorps members who help students and community members achieve their digital literacy goals, which could relate to the basic computer and information literacy skills, it can include navigating D2L/MyCourses, it could be learning more about AI tools. At Larimer Campus, we've had this program since 2023.
- You can read more about the kinds of topics a Navigator might cover, though there are many more! The Digital Divide: We Can Help You Cross It | FRCC Blog (the availability has changed since this post was written.
- The best way to set up an appoint is by calling 970-962-31534 (you can glance at the schedule here Booking System - Loveland Public Library | Skedda, though it can be a confusing platform.)
