How are books organized on the shelves at the Harmony Libraries?
Answer
At the Harmony Library, non-fiction and fiction books are organized differently. Ask a library staff member to find a specific book or topic area!
Non-fiction books are organized by the Dewey Decimal System, which uses number combinations (call numbers) to place together books with similar topics.
Fiction books are organized by genre, then alphabetically by author's last name and first initial, then alphabetically by book title if an author has more than one book.
(Many academic libraries use the Library of Congress system to organize all their books; those call numbers use a combination of letters and numbers to capture more specific topics.)
Vocabulary tip: library staff often refer to the "stacks." This means the shelves the hold the library books, magazines, and other items in the collection.
